Will this wall cause America’s fall? President Donald Trump shut down the government over border funding.

The shutdown lasted from December 22 to January 25. Donald Trump signed a measure reopening the government for three weeks, because federal employees were not receiving their paychecks, housing assistance was delayed, and national parks were closed.

800,000 workers went four week with no pay. More and more federal workers had to go to food banks, because they could not afford basic necessities.

The shutdown affected US citizens like Coast Guard Chief Michael McClantock, in Miami, Florida. He met with Vietnam veteran, Billy Aldrich, and his wife for dinner. Aldrich paid for dinner in honor of his services. “The past few weeks have been stressful and difficult. There have been loans and deferments,” said Heather McClantock, Michael’s wife.

“Seeing federal workers in need of food and receiving it from a food bank during the shutdown was tragic,” says Democrat Maryland Senator Cardin.

President Trump refuses to accept a federal budget unless it includes 5.7 billion dollars for his border wall. The wall was supposed to be paid for by Mexico, under a supposed new trade agreement through North America, though the plan has not been approved by Congress. He is now saying taxpayers will pay for the wall.

“I will build a wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build that wall very inexpensively. I will build a great wall on the southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for the wall,” said Donald Trump at his presidential announcement speech.

The president thinks that building the wall will “make America great again,” and that being a country with closed borders will make the US stronger. Trump says illegal immigrants take American jobs and cause crime rates to rise. “We are out of space to hold them and we have no proper way to restore them back to their home country.” However more than half of Americans don’t agree with the president’s opinion.

According to PBS NewsHour and Marist, 69% of Americans are not worried about a wall. 28% believe that the wall should be immediate priority, 19% think it is not an immediate priority, and 50% think a wall should not be built at all.

Of those polls, 91% of Democrats voted the wall is not the focus right now, and 7% voted it is not the focus at all. 63% of Republicans think it is the main priority right now. Either way it all effects the people of the United States.

President Donald Trump should think of better ways to get things done instead of punishing the citizens of America. Hopefully, we will not see another shutdown in the near future.
