Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day celebrates romantic love, making it a popular day for couples to spend together and is traditionally associated with red hearts, romance, flowers, candy and other sweet things, and the exchange of cards, called valentines that express love. Valentine’s falls annually on February 14th.

A valentine is a sweetheart: specifically, someone who receives a greeting or attention on Valentine’s Day. There are many words for someone you like in a romantic way, such as “sweetie,” “main squeeze,” “boyfriend,” “girlfriend,” “significant other,” “a friend,” or a “special someone.” There are different ways people celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Every year, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold across the country. Sorry men, it looks like you’ll be spending twice as much as women this year on gifts. The average man spends $130 on Valentine’s day, while women spend about $70.

Have you ever heard of the Valentine’s Day massacre? I didn’t until recently. The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre was in 1929 on Valentine’s Day. Seven members and associates of Chicago’s North Side Gang were gathered at the Lincoln Park garage on the morning of February 14. It was the culmination of a gang war between arch rivals Al Capone and Bugs Moran.

George “Bugs” Moran was a career criminal who ran the North Side gang in Chicago during the bootlegging era of the 1920’s. George ordered the Moran gang to be decimated. The massacre included a total of 7 deaths, five from the North Side Gang and two other affiliates. The weapons used were two thompson submachine guns (tommy guns) and two shot guns.

The Stoneman Douglas High School shooting occurred in Florida on February 14, 2018, Valentine’s Day. A gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, killing 17 and injuring another 17. Identified as Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year old former student at the school, was the assailant. He was arrested without incident about an hour later in nearby Coral Springs.

He was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. Cruz’s killing spree is the deadliest high school shooting in United States’ history.

Valentine’s Day is one to spread love, be the love, and pass it around. Aside from the things that have happened in our past on Valentine’s Day, there’s more we should give to those knowing that each time Valentine’s Day comes around we give a little more, and are more affectionate.

It shouldn’t be just once a year to offer one’s love, but again these days are making you cherish these specific days even more.
