Where Do You Sit?

Rosa Parks made a big impact on the black community in America to this day.

Rosa Louise McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on February 4, 1913. Rosa Parks still lived at home, her mom was a teacher and they valued education. Her father was a carpenter.  Eventually, Rosa moved to Montgomery, Alabama, and attended high school at a laboratory school at the Alabama State Teachers’ College for the black community. After going to school, Rosa dropped out of school at 16 to care for her unwell grandma, and shortly after her mom was deathly ill. Leona McCauley passed away on December 12, 1979. After losing her mom, Rosa got married at 19 and married Raymond Parks. Raymond Parks was a self-educated barber who was also a long-time member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. That following year Rosa got her high school diploma.

Actually, it was Rosa Parks and three others that were seated on the bus. The bus driver demanded that she and the other three immediately move to the back of the bus and make room for the boarding white people. Rosa Parks and the three other black individuals were asked to stand. Rosa Parks refused and defied the bus driver. She would not vacate her seat. Rosa Parks was then arrested by the police for violating this order. Rosa Parks went to court and was later found guilty of disorderly conduct.  Rosa Parks was a seamstress, and because of this encounter and charge, she was fired from her job. It left her behind bars. Rosa’s husband was also fired from his job because he could not speak about the legal case. Rosa’s stubbornness and unwillingness to not give up her seat on the bus, sparked change throughout the country. It also landed her in the history books.  

When Rosa Parks was asked to move to the back of the bus with three other black individuals and give up their seats, is known as segregation. Diving people for certain, uncharacteristic, or physical reasons. Rosa Parks inspired the African American community to boycott buses for 381 days. This became famously known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It was led by the newest member, Martin Luther King, Jr.  Until Rosa passed away in 2005, she fought against racial prejudice and discrimination. Rosa Parks had many famous quotes that are remembered to this day as a reminder to always fight for what is right.  One of her famous quotes is, “I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” Another famous quote by Rosa Parks read, “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.” Rosa Parks wanted to be remembered this way as stated in this quote by her before her death, “I would like to be remembered as a person who wanted to be free….so other people would also be free.” Rosa Parks is an inspiration to all people and will always be remembered for her participation in civil rights and will continue to be honored and studied in history books everywhere. Rosa lived a very fulfilling life.
