Helping with Hurricane Harvey

Jeremiah Oloff, Journalist

Hurricane  Harvey, a (category 4 hurricane),  hit on August 25, 2017 in Houston, Texas and caused flooding which was 51.88 inches high, 50,000  homes were damaged  and  1,000  homes were destroyed, and 70 people died.

The destruction down in Houston is devastating to  everybody who lives down there. Families have lost loved ones and their homes. At least 66 people were injured due to the hurricane, It did over 19 billion dollars of damage.

Some  people who have helped are golfer Sergio Garcia, Trevor Maxwell, owner of 1-775 flooded, and JJ. Watt, a Houston Texans defensive player.  Sergio Garcia donated  $130,000 in total. Trevor Maxwell  brought donated supplies  to Texas. JJ. Watt  donated millions of dollars.

How would you feel if you lost every thing like people in Texas did? Mark Datu, senior at PVHS says, “If I were in their shoes, I would feel like I lost everything, so I really wanted to help them.” I get how Mark feels, and I think everybody feels  the same.

Mark Datu had the idea of the Miracle Minute which raised about $500 to help down in Houston, Texas.

Mark Datu held the Miracle Minute. He says “ The miracle minute for Harvey raised about $500 according to the Principal Ehrheart, They’re going to give those funds to a charity, and they’ll use those funds to help victims.”

Datu’s idea was great  because it will people down in Texas with the destruction Harvey caused. It will not help much but will still help. Others can help by donating to charities that will use them to help people in Texas. Datu says that “Others can help by donating money.” Mark is right because we are too far away to go and help them personally.

The best way for us to help Texas is to donate money to charities like Red Cross that will help victims of Hurricane Harvey. You can contact Red Cross by going to www.redcross.org. People in Houston need help, Harvey was devastating.
