Arming PVHS Teachers
October 22, 2019
The number of school shootings in the U.S. is on the rise. Luckily for us, PVHS students and staff have not been victim of such events yet, but should our teachers have a way to defend their students and themselves in case of an emergency?
Currently, 18 states have passed a law allowing public school teachers to carry a concealed firearm with them on school campus. Nevada is not included in those 18 states but should that change?
In the past 10 years, there have been an astounding 180 school shootings with surprisingly only 2 of them in Nevada. With that said, would Nevada even need armed teachers?
“I think firearms are legal for safety reasons,” says PVHS junior Brenden Loyoko, “but there will always be bad people using a good thing for a bad reason.” On the other hand, Junior Jakob Richardson said, “I see guns used to meaninglessly killing people more than saving people” but he added “ if the teachers are given the proper training I think it would benefit the security of the school for sure.”
If you live in Pahrump you more than likely know about Front Sight. This company has offered to give the teachers of PVHS the required training if the law allows armed teachers was said passed. Dr. Ignatius Piazza, the founder of
Front Sight says, “Front Sight will accept training up to three staff members from each school.” Piazza added, “There is evidence that a gun in the hand of a teacher will stop an armed attacker.”
Quite honestly I completely agree with Dr. Piazza, Breneden Loyko, and Jakob Richardson. Arming teachers would be absolutely beneficial for the security of the school.
Even though there has only been 2 school shootings in Nevada, maybe that number can be brought down to zero in the next ten years with zero lives lost. If the law was passed in Nevada, PVHS would have a better chance of not falling victim to a tragedy.

With the rise of schools shootings in America and around the world, I think with the proper training all teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon due to the fact that there is always the possibility of a school shooting at pvhs or any school around the globe. The teachers should first be mentally evaluated, then trained. Because if a teacher is not mentally stable, then they shouldn’t be allowed to carry a weapon. Granted there hasn’t been many shootings in Nevada, but the world is a dangerous place with people who easily get upset. So there will forever be a possibility of a school shooting anywhere. On the downside, a teacher could be mentally evaluated and be crazy and still get a weapon and could cause a school shooting. We can debate whether the Pros of the situation outweighs the Cons, then perhaps just be extremely strict on the laws of teachers having gun enforcement.

It was a very interesting topic to read, and I like how you added the amount of school shootings in the U.S. Not only was it well written but it also included how in Pahrump, Front Sight is willing to train up to 3 staff members per school. Overall, I think it was a great article.

I think that arming teachers has both ups and downs. On one hand it would be great for safety and would have the ability to neutralize a threat quickly, but on the other, teachers could get out of hand. You can never know someone’s intentions, what if a teacher gets fed up with the student being disruptive, I think maybe an armed security force would be better, with proper training and equipment.

I feel like arming teachers would be great in some aspects, you just have to give guns to the right teachers. If it is confirmed that the teacher won’t shoot somebody because they get mad, then I think that it’s alright to arm a few. On the other hand, teachers aren’t really supposed to be security guards. I think that arming some teachers will be alright and will fend off an attacker.

I like how you say how many shootings have been in Nevada. I think that we really should be a state that allows teachers to be armed, because if we could not have any shooting’s in the schools of Nevada then that would be funomenal. There should have been more student and teacher quotes in the story to say how more than one person feels about this topic.

This article was very well put together. With all the shool shootings going on and making a big rise in the past years, armed teachers may be a good thing. What if you give a weapon to a teacher and they do misuse it? We could be potentially be putting students in a bad enviroment if it is used wrong. The article over all was great and there was a lot of information put together! Good job!!

I think you should also take into consideration of how the teachers and staff at the school would feel to be armed while class is in session. Otherwise, this is a great story, good job!
