The Government and Protection from Covid-19
For over a year and a half now, the Covid-19 pandemic has terrorized the world. Now, with the release of a vaccine for the virus, disunity has spread throughout the U.S. over whether it is the government’s job to protect American citizens from the virus, or not.

Those who say that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the citizens of the U.S. from Coronavirus believe that it’s important for the people to have the resources to protect themselves and their loved ones. Since the general populace doesn’t have these resources on their own, they need the government to provide them.
Additionally, the very first sentence in the Constitution, the Preamble, states that it is the duty of the government to “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare…” In this case, there is more concern over “promot[ing] the general welfare.” The U.S. government has a justice system and a military, but the general welfare, or the needs of the people for things such as health and safety, is something of great unease in these times. The government has to be there to promote the health and safety of Americans.
On the other hand, there are those who say it is not the government’s job to protect the people if it means revoking their rights. Benjamin Franklin once said, “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Giving away their rights for a bit of safety will ultimately bring more danger than peace. These people believe that it’s an individual responsibility to protect oneself.
And since this debate mostly stems from the strong encouragement to get vaccinated and the government’s push to mandate it, many worry about the effectiveness of the vaccine, since not nearly enough study has been done on it to know if it really works. Along with that, there is concern over the long-term effects. Unlike all of the other vaccines, the Covid-19 shot doesn’t have the data or the longevity to know those effects.
Regardless of what you believe, however, the Coronavirus is still rampant and people are still getting sick, some even dying. Some protection from this virus is needed, whether you think that comes from a vaccine or just healthy living. Find your protection and stay safe, Trojans.
