The Annual Baja 1000

The Baja 1000 is held in Baja California and is one of the oldest, longest, and most respected off-road races that attracts competitors from around the world. The first race was on “November 1, 1967, the first race was won by a dune buggy, the race was 27 hours and 38 minutes.”. The course varies from around 600 to 850 miles long, depending on the course. The course changes every year, the drivers will have a new challenge every year because of it. The course could be 20-25 hours long which may vary between the courses.

To race in the Baja 1000 requires $100,000 trucks, that’s the average for a truck, and the cost just to enter the race will be about $150,000; The courses switch every year so it’s always a new challenge, you have to respect the course or else you may crash. Then the money you put into the race will all be gone because you would have to fix all of the damages. Though if you get first place in the race you will be rewarded way less than what you’ve paid to just be able to race, the winner gets $3,000, but once you have all the parts to maintain your truck or buggy you will eventually make that money back.

The Baja 1000 has around 6 classes of off-road vehicles, The race includes a Trophy truck, Dirtbike, Truggy, Side-by-side, Baja Bug, and Buggie. Anybody can enter the Baja 1000, and you also don’t have to qualify to compete. Anyone can race in the Baja 1000, there are at least 6 continents that have competitors that will race in the Baja 1000. The race was “traditionally started in Ensenada and ended in La Paz, which makes the race a straight shot down to the peninsula, there has also been a course that runs a loop race that starts and ends in Northern Baja.”.

There is something called the Baja 1000 Ironman. This is because there is a solo that races a motorcycle/enduro bike, and still races the same course as the other competitors. The Ironman keeps all his equipment on him at all times just in case something happens. This competitor has to race through anything and everything, through the blazing hot and through the night. Riding a dirtbike for a couple of hours straight is exhausting. According to a couple of YouTube videos I watched from all across the internet, they have a rough experience from what I’ve seen. There have been multiple crashes during the duration of 20-25 hours to complete the race. Then it’s on to prep for the next year when you race again.
