How Losing A Loved One Affects the Holidays

How losing a loved one affects a person, especially during holidays, when you need them the most.

For some, Christmas can be very difficult. After losing a loved one all of the firsts are very difficult. And it can become extremely hard for an individual to make it through the holidays.

Decorating the tree and putting Christmas lights up brings on a new wave of emotions for some. It can leave individuals feeling lost and broken. Speaking from personal experience, I don’t know how to feel during this holiday season. The process of grief never prepares you for the emotional baggage you will carry through the season of cheer.

The journey of grief is entirely personal. And nobody understands exactly what you’re going through. There is an indescribable weight of grief, with no such timeline on how long you are allowed to grieve.

I think Christmas hits harder than any other special occasion, or holiday, simply because it is the holiday where you spend the whole day with family. It’s different for others, but for those who usually have family with them on this day, it hits their heart with more of an impact.

No matter the loved one you lose, being a parent, grandparent, sibling, etc, the invasive feeling and sorrow is undeniably the worst possible feeling. Absolutely no one could shake it.

It is very important to surround yourself with family and friends during a difficult time like this. It is also very helpful to get a therapist, as this will help you navigate through the season.

The feeling is no matter how hard you try, the world goes on. The guilt of them not being there makes it hard for you to even be happy. Being asked “What do you want for Christmas?”, feels like an impossible question, because all that’s wanted is that person back.

Christmas can be difficult for everyone. People never realize what someone is going through. So, if you know somebody who lost a loved one this holiday season give them a big hug or even some words of encouragement!
