The United States of America is one of the few countries that are built upon other cultures. Historical immigration caused major cultural influences from Indigenous Americans, Latin Americans, Africans, and Asians, to Europeans, and it is important to learn about what makes America, America. These cultural differences truly make America unique and beautiful, and at our school, a club that can help us understand is the Multicultural Club.
What is the Multicultural Club?
This club is run by Mrs. Martin, the psychology and human geography teacher, and Ms. Gutierriez, the math teacher for those who are within special educational standards. This club is an outreach for cultures to be celebrated and appreciated because it is great to recognize the cultural heritages that make up America. They meet every second Tuesday and last Tuesday of the month. Every month, they put up a huge mural depending on what is celebrated that month. Their most recent mural was to celebrate Arab American Heritage Month which can be seen in the photo. They share the successes of various cultures and hand out free snacks related to the culture on cheat day. This club very much encourages connections with other students as well as celebrating diversity. It provides a way for people from different backgrounds to come together, share their cultures, and learn from one another. This way our school could hopefully be more inclusive, open-minded, and less discriminatory.
Why did they Decide to Start this Club?
Originally, the idea came to Mrs. Martin one night when I was chatting with her at a band concert. We were talking about my culture, Nicaraguan because something in her lesson earlier that day related to it. She was intrigued and thought why not start up a Multicultural Club because other schools also have one, and it would be a great way to highlight diversity, equality, and inclusion. So, she teamed up with Ms. Gutierriez and they got it done, and the feedback so far has been very positive. When asked how they feel about running this club, they said, “Love it! The kids are wonderful!!”
The Future of this Club
The club will for sure be running next year, and they hope to find some funding for field trips as well as have dances with cultural music. I have seen other schools do this, and I think it would be cool to have a multicultural week where we all express our cultures in food, clothing, or other things. This club is very welcoming and a member, Lezlie Miramontes, says, “ I wouldn’t change anything about this, and I will be joining again next year.”
