Politics are something thousands of people are passionate about here in the town of Pahrump, Nevada. People tend to always have their own political opinions and could sometimes be a sensitive topic to talk about. With a variety of opinions here at Pahrump Valley High School, we have a politics club called “The Purple Club”. The club is named the Purple Club because the color red represents the Republican Party while the color blue represents the Democrat Party. So what does blue and red make? You guessed it, purple! This club’s purpose is to talk about your own opinions on politics as well as being able to understand your peers’ opinions and matters.
I interviewed students around campus that are in the Purple Club. First, let’s start with the student advisor of the club, Wolfe Beckley, the reason the he had taken over the club was because of a teacher named Charles Larssen who first created the club due to the big election in 2016 and really wanted to restart talking about politics and discuss whats is going on in the world. Since Mr. Larssen discontinued the club, Beckley came in and wanted to continue the club so he could also discuss politics with other students, as well as his sister, who is also a part of the club. He’s been the student advisor of the Purple Club since his freshman year and is now in his junior year. One exciting thing that they would do in the club is that Beckley’s mom would bring the club cookies.
Overall, it is an easygoing club and when coming to personal opinions in the club it’s sometimes difficult because everyone is trying to prove their point or make an understanding. At times those opinions turn into a dispute between club members. Some pros and cons in the club that Buckley has informed us with are that “there are mostly discussions, large types of disagreements, and certain different opinions going around on how people who don’t want to share their opinions.” Something that Buckley wants to do to keep the club still running is to advertise the club more and to talk to different people about it. Lastly, Beckley would also want to continue because many people in Pahrump have their own political matters.
Purple Club seems to be very important to Beckley and his classmates, including one of his classmates in the club, Ashlon Stewart. Some things they discuss in Purple Club are current issues, conspiracy theories, different peoples’ point of views, and sometimes just random topics. Some conflicts that Stewart has in the club are usually arguments about religion and honestly just back and forth on random topics.
When coming to her own opinion, Stewart said “I have to worry about my own priorities, past opinion on religion and mostly philosophical opinions”. It has been hard for her to make it to the Friday meetings due to her doing mountain biking and not having a ride. Stewart’s mom has been trying to change her work schedule to make the time. She’s always been very interested in being Purple Club knowing she could speak her mind about whatever her point of view was on the topic especially on bios opinions. When being in the club they make everyone feel included and heard. It’s structured on how the group corporates together but there are some things the club could improve on like having less disputes. Lastly, Stewart’s personal opinion on the club is that it is “a very good club and it creates a good sense of communication and speaking my mind”.
If you are ever interested in considering being in Purple Club here at PVHS make sure to talk to either Ashlon Stewart or Wolfe Beckley! In Mr. Larssen’s classroom, rm. 214 after school Fridays from 2:15 to 3:15.
