Pahrump Valley High School’s chess club, it’s a fun place. It is held on Wednesdays after school in room 227. It will likely not have any more big events for the end of the year but it will still be a fun place for people to play and learn chess.
Chance Barney, one of the members who attends the club on occasion, said when asked what he liked about the club “I like meeting new people and testing each other’s skills.” Along with that, the club’s advisor, Edward Dabrowski, said he plans to advise the club next year. He hopes that it will “evolve so that we may be able to have competitive matches against other schools” in which there will likely be more events next year. When asked, the only thing Dabrowski wishes he could change about the club is, “I wish I didn’t have to wait on other people’s decision-making so that I could take the club to do things.” On the opposite side of the spectrum, Barney claims “There’s nothing I would change about chess club.”
The club was made this year around Christmas time when Wolf Beckley asked Dabrowski if we could start it back up again, and Dabrowski was able to make this happen. As previously mentioned the club will be going on next year and there will likely be more events going on it may also evolve into a chess team. As mentioned previously Dabrowski hopes it may lead to something greater where there may be competition(s) with other schools. Along with that, Dabrowski hopes more people get involved with the club and chess.
On top of that, as mentioned by Barney, you may meet new people of various skill levels and backgrounds. Comparing Barney’s and Dabrowski’s backgrounds with chess for a moment, Barney played chess since he was 5, and Dabrowski started learning chess when he was in high school when he was given a chess set by his aunt. As shown by these differences, you may meet various kinds of people. The club will likely continue to grow with more people giving it a chance, even though some don’t play chess.
Overall the club will be more developed next year, but it’s still fun this year. There will likely be more events and maybe a chess team next year. Following that, more people should learn how to play chess; it’s a popular game and it makes people think more, As long as things go the way Mr. Dabrowski intends it can develop the club into something greater. With that, it is greatly suggested that you visit the chess club sometime this year, even if you don’t play chess you might surprise yourself with how entertaining meeting new people can be. Remember, chess club takes place in Mr. Dabrowski’s room, room 227 on Wednesdays after school.
