Last Friday, August 22, Pahrump Valley High School had its first varsity football game of the year. PVHS would win the first game dominantly, beating Cadence 54-0. The Trojans didn’t even give the Cougars a chance, but instead kept pounding on the points. The score was already 40-0 at halftime. It was so bad that the scoreboard was reset out of respect for the Cougars. Quarterback Kayne Horibe had a terrific game, going 4/6 on passes for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns. Horibe also had a day on the ground, rushing for 142 yards, including a 65-yard rushing touchdown. Special Teams also showed up, in the 2nd quarter, Jack Walker blocked a punt and Preston Doctor picked it up and brought it back to the house. Right before halftime, Horibe ended up in the endzone on a QB sneak, making the score 40-0 at halftime.

The Trojans received the ball at halftime, and they weren’t done yet. Running back and Safety Austin Alvarez returned the opening half kickoff to extend the lead to 47-0. The defense also really showed out this game, providing a shutout. The defense had multiple three-and-outs and an absurd 5 fumbles. Angel Ware also got an 85-yard pick-six to improve the lead and swallow up the Cougars. This was a great season opener for Varsity Football and can be the start of a season with a lot of potential.
PVHS had a Boys Soccer game on Wednesday, August 20. They played Virgin Valley in a game that turned out disappointing for our Trojans. The final score of the game was 4-0, with Virgin Valley earning a shutout win over the Trojans. JV Soccer player Samuel Sylva might know why this was such a disappointing turnout for the Trojans. Samuel thinks that the game was a shutout because ¨Mainly because it was hot, we just gave up after 3 goals.¨ ¨Varsity and JV thought that we weren’t gonna win anymore.¨ I then asked, ¨What mistakes caused Virgin Valley even to get 3 goals?¨ ¨Our defense wasn’t trying their hardest, we made some mistakes, I think we couldvé done better because Virgin Valley´s defense wasn’t very good.¨ Samuel thinks ¨I think I also sucked mainly because of the heat, every 4 minutes I was swapped in a nd out, I think I could’ve done better because I gave up 2 balls.

¨Next, I interviewed Varsity Soccer player TC Hone, ¨Lack of communication and us playing against injuries were pretty hard, they were a good team.¨ Thatś what he told me when I asked about the turnout of the game. I then asked TC how he thought he did. ¨I think I did really good, had good shots on goal that I just didn´t commit. I think our defense was solid, but we were really tired and killed at the end. ¨I think I did okay on striking. They have a really good offensive line.¨ I asked TC how the Trojans can avoid future shutouts, ¨Communicate better and work more as a team overall. The game didn´t go as we thought it would, but that game can help the Trojans learn from their mistakes.
