When students and teachers listen to music in the school environment, almost everyone can agree that it helps them do a little better on whatever they might be doing. Various universities, such as Brown University, and The University of California, have proven that music actually helps students in school. These studies were done as an attempt to see if more students should use music and if teachers should encourage students to listen to music while completing work. Nonetheless, research has shown that music helps in various ways for example helping students keep focus, providing motivation, and providing calm for exams and classwork in any case, this helps students achieve their academic goals and future plans.
When questioned, fellow classmate Kalan Thunderwolf says, “Music helps me study because it helps me concentrate due to it blocking out background noise and helping me remember information.” This statement tells us that even when distractions occur in the learning environment, Thunderwolf is able to keep focus and finish his studying in peace. This is huge when it comes to studying in a loud environment or when there are lots of people around. Due to constant focus, you will eventually retain more information, and you can perform much better on assignments, tests, etc.
Not only can music help you keep focus, but music also has the very useful benefit of keeping you calm, Florida National University tells us, “Music is found to help people perform better in high-pressure situations, such as the bi-annual high-pressure event that is finals week.” Florida University also confirms that music reduces stress levels, which is why people perform much better on tests and final exams.
While all of this is very useful, all of these benefits are useless if you can’t manage to get off of your bed and do what needs to be done, which leads me to the next benefit of music: motivation. Motivation helps you when you’re feeling low and don’t want to really do anything; however, studies have found that music is a great way to gain motivation, especially when you don’t want to do that book report that’s due next week. coming straight from Grand Canyon University, “Doing well in school requires a substantial amount of studying. You may need a bit of extra motivation to tackle a tough assignment or get through a study session. This is another good reason to try studying with music. Being able to study while listening to your favorite music can be enough of a motivator to help you get to work.”
There are so many reasons why music can be useful in schools. Music acts like a motivator, a stress reliever and even acts like a way to plunge yourself into your work. But did you know that the type of music you listen to could also play a part in how well you study? Studies have shown that listening to certain genres of music can help you more than others. While it’s always based on preference, it never hurts to try certain music genres like classical, jazz, instrumental, and low fidelity, which can help more when studying than other genres like rock, rap, heavy metal, and punk rock.
So far, we have learned how music can help you concentrate and it can motivate you, as well as boost your performance. I encourage you, with all that you have found out today, fellow classmates and teachers, to use music to carry out your academic journey and accomplish great things while listening to great tunes.
