Princess Diana’s Life & Death

The story of one of the most admired and influential royals in history.

Princess Diana’s Life & Death

Princess Diana was the Princess of Wales and was the first wife of King Charles III. She was born on July 1, 1961, and later died on August 31, 1997. She is the mother of both of King Charles III’s children, William, Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Diana was admired and was very loved throughout her life and she was given the nickname “The People’s Princess”. According to an article from bu.edu, “Diana was a devoted mother to her sons, William and Harry, and a lifelong advocate for children, AIDS-related causes, and victims of landmines. Hailed as the “peoples princess,” she is also credited with helping to modernize the monarchy.” She was known to give plenty of time and money to foundations and charities around the world to help those in need.

Long before she married King Charles III, she was already a member of a royal family. By birth, she was a member of the royal house of Spencer then when she got married she became a member of the royal house of Windsor. According to Wikipedia, the Spencer family was very close to the Windsor family. When Diana was little she used to spend plenty of time with Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth II’s sons. She was originally homeschooled for a few years but eventually, she was sent to West Heath Girls’ School in Sevenoaks, Kent in 1973. As she got older, she moved into her mother’s flat back in London and started working low-paying jobs, one of those jobs had been as a nanny for Philippa and Jeremy Whitaker. While she was working one of those jobs, she was invited to a party as a guest at a country weekend getaway and that is where she met Prince Charles.

Princess Diana had originally met Prince Charles in 1977 at a summer party when he was dating her older sister, Sarah. They met when Diana was 16 and Prince Charles was 29 years old. Even though he was dating Diana’s older sister, Diana had told many reporters that she always wanted to marry the Prince. Town And Country Magazine reported that “Once Charles’s relationship with Sarah fizzled, the prince and Diana did not see each other again until 1980 when both she and Charles were invited to stay at Philip de Pass’s house in Sussex.” After a while and some unsure feelings, the couple started dating soon after. In February of 1981, the couple announced their engagement. On July 29, 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana got married six months after the engagement was announced. Tatler.com says that “the wedding was watched by 3,500 guests and watched by 750 million people on television.”

While now being part of the British Royal Family, Diana had difficulties fitting in. Even though the family liked her, she wasn’t really happy. On her wedding day, she told a reporter “I felt like a lamb to a slaughter, and I knew it.” Diana had expressed in multiple interviews that she was very unhappy in her marriage, she has even quoted that the day of her wedding was “the worst day of her life.” To make matters even worse, multiple sources have stated that Prince Charles told Diana that he never loved her. From then on it was true that she no longer trusted him, Prince Charles later admitted that he had been in an affair with his former ex-girlfriend, Camila Parker-Bowles.

After 15 years of marriage and two children together, Princess Diana and Prince Charles finalized their divorce in 1996 after breaking up in 1992. Diana stated their split was because of incompatibility and Charle’s extramarital affair with one Camilla Parker Bowles. Only a mere year after her divorce was finalized, on August 31st, 1997, Diana died in Paris at the age of 36 in a car accident in the Pont de A’lma tunnel. Her death was ruled an accident. Despite not being a legal member of the Royal family, she was given a state funeral and was interred on an island in a lake at Althorp park.

Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles on April 9th, 2005. Camilla became the new Princess of Wales and later Queen Consort after the death of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022. You can pay your respects to Princess Diana at Althorp Estate in the United Kingdom.
