Pahrump Valley High School’s Chess Club is run and participated in by Kevin Sepulveda. In room 230, Tuesdays after school until 3:40 p.m., the PHVS Chess Club meets. Students get to play, spend time with like-minded peers, and learn more about the game, all in a place they’re familiar with.
Ethan Marsh, a freshman who was in the club this year, stated, “It was very fun, especially tournaments against each other and getting to see who comes out on top.” Of course, like any game, chess can get extremely competitive, so, on occasion, the club holds friendly tournaments. These tournaments require focus, precise moves, and a love for the game.
Chess also requires dedication. You can’t just pick up a chessboard and expect to be the best. It’s the kind of game that takes time and needs dedication to getting better in order to become a great player. Improvement takes practice, and the best way to practice is to just play. “I think it made me a bit of a better player,” said Marsh. There’s no need to stress over mistakes or feel the need to play better than others; just work at becoming the best player you can.

While there are a plethora of clubs to join at Pahrump Valley High School, the chess club is unique. “It was really relaxed, just kids going after school to play and have fun,” said Tyler Weaver, another freshman. There aren’t large expectations or commitments that make you feel like you’re doing even more work after school; it’s a comfortable space. Even if it is only for a short bit each week. “I liked that it gave me a small thing to look forward to,” said Weaver.
The chess club is a place where students can get away from everything and just play a game that many people really enjoy. It’s not a club that you have to worry about going to and getting judged or picked on for a hobby that you enjoy.
In conclusion, the chess club can be very competitive but also extremely interesting. Many other students have agreed that it is an enjoyable way to spend their time. So, if you’re thinking about what club might be right for you this coming school year, take time to consider the chess club!
