The Pahrump Valley Boys’ Varsity basketball team recently faced a tough challenge when they played against Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas. The game ended in a heartbreaking loss, with the final score being 56-55, just one point shy of victory. It was an intense match, with both teams showing great determination. Sadly, Pahrump couldn’t clinch the win, highlighting how close the game was.
During the 2024-2025 season, the Pahrump Valley Boys have had their share of thrilling finishes and some tough losses that have affected their overall record. For example, they faced a significant defeat against Legacy High School losing 81-36, and narrowly lost to Chaparral with a score of 47-42. These results show the hardships that the team has experienced this season.
On a brighter note, the team has also enjoyed some exciting victories that brought joy to their fans. But their first win came to a team of Pinecrest Academy Cadence with a blowout of 58-30. They also won a close game against Moapa, finishing 49-48, which surely kept everyone on the edge of their seats. They also bounced back with another solid win against Pinecrest Academy Cadence, winning 42-32.
Overall, this season has been quite challenging for the Pahrump Valley Boys. Even though they have worked hard and shown great teamwork, the scoreboard hasn’t always reflected their efforts, leading to some disappointment. However, the team remains hopeful about the future. They are committed to making improvements and working hard, believing they can turn things around for a better season next year. While making the playoffs seems unlikely, the players are determined to keep pushing in every game, aiming to improve their record and grow together as a team.
As the season progresses, there have been several promising signs for the future of the boys’ varsity basketball team, primarily thanks to the notable contributions of players like Lucas Gaveneda, Jack Toth, and the standout Jamiah Mendenhall. These talented sophomores have displayed impressive skills on the court, with Lucas Gaveneda leading the charge by averaging 4.4 points and securing 3.6 rebounds per game.
To gain more insight into their experiences, I had the opportunity to interview Lucas Gaveneda. One of the key questions I posed was whether he felt the team could have performed better this season. He responded, “Yes, I believe we could’ve had a better season if some players hadn’t gotten into trouble and remained eligible.” This acknowledgment highlights the challenges the team faced due to off-court issues which undoubtedly impacted their performance.
In exploring the potential for improvement, I also asked Lucas if he saw any signs of hope for the program’s future. He replied enthusiastically, saying, “Yes, I believe there is a lot of hope for our future. The freshman team and the JV squad have shown glimpses of greatness, and as everyone continues to improve I am confident that we will see growth. However, only time will tell.” His outlook reflects not only his commitment to the game but also a belief in the collective talent and potential of the upcoming players within the program.
With another sophomore, Jack Toth is averaging 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds and has even started a couple of games. When asked about the future of the program, Toth’s response differed from Gavenda’s. “By the time I graduate we would’ve won a state title or at least have been to the state championship.” Again, I asked him whether he felt the team could have performed better this season. He said, ¨Yes, I believe we could have had a better season but some unlucky things happen.¨ The last sophomore on varsity is Jamiah Mendenhall averaging 2 points and 3 rebounds. These upcoming players give hope to future successful seasons for the PVHS Boy’s Varsity Basketball team and show what the future holds for them.
