Nowadays, whenever you go online, you see videos, pictures, and even music that’s AI-generated. There are many mixed opinions about it that come from millions of different people. AI has been around for a while now, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Every day, technology advances more and more, and as time goes on, AI becomes more advanced, and soon its reach will be over different topics like art, music, and soon it’ll start to work.
There are many people against the use of generative AI. For example, Pahrump Valley High School freshman Brielle Waxler. When asked about her opinions on AI she said, “I think that AI is a good development, but I believe it’s harmful to the community because platforms with little to no restrictions can generate and have suggestive content of unconsenting adults as well as minors, stolen art straight from different posts and smashed them all together, and fooled so many people myself included, and I believe we can live without generative AI.”
While on the topic, when asked what she thought about AI as a whole, she claimed, “Not all AI is bad. It’s a tool and a helpful one at that; it’s just being misused. I believe we don’t need generative AI, but should work on AI that helps those with disabilities. I’ve read about a pair of AI glasses for deaf and blind people that can communicate things around them, or take words being spoken and use subtitles to allow them to be aware of what’s being said.” It’s clear that Waxler doesn’t care for generative AI and instead believes we should shift our time and energy to AI and technology that can help with medical needs and those with disabilities.
However, when PVHS teacher Michael Pape was asked about his opinions on AI, he had a similar opinion.. He stated, “It can ruin people’s lives. Things like deep fakes, videos, and photos of people doing crimes they never committed,” which is similar to what Waxler said.
AI in itself can be dangerous, especially when it comes to what it makes. Without proper regulations and restrictions, people can create things like clips of people saying terrible things that can cause outrage and can cancel people. Then they can create clips of things that never happened of people doing crimes or assaulting others, which have ended up on the news before. And, it seems that AI has so few restrictions. There have been so many cases on Grok AI where users insert photos and have the robot do creepy things to the photo, and the AI just does it. It has little to no rules you have to follow in order to use it, and it seems that things are only getting worse when it comes to the things people are having it make.
Sure, AI can create images free of charge and in such little time, but sometimes the things that people have it make can be extremely harmful. The people who use AI for these types of things at most are just shunned by others with a brain on the internet. There is no consequence for using AI for evil, and there really should be.
AI is a helpful and wonderful tool that can solve so many issues we as humans can’t; however, AI isn’t being used in a responsible way. If AI had more rules and regulations to keep people from doing such vile things, it could be a much more beneficial tool.
When using AI, whether it be generating photos or music, be safe with it. Be respectful with what you make, because even if it’s made by a non-living being, it can still harm those who are living.
