Spring is here, and with that, the spring sports are too, which include track and field! Pahrump Valley High School’s track team consists of both girls and boys teams full of talent, itching to have more.
Here at PVHS, our track teams do all sorts of activities, such as long jumps, hurdles, and more. For new players, or people thinking about joining track, that might sound overwhelming. Not to worry, although there’s a plethora of events for one to join in on. It’s easy to pick the one that’s right for anybody.

“It’s based on how you’re built, your height, and weight. For example, if you had strong arms, but weak legs, I’d recommend shotput.” Says Charisma Woodard, a freshman student at PVHS involved in track and field.
There’s something for everybody on track. It just depends on the student. However, the head coach, Daniel Nagle, has a different philosophy on the matter: “If it’s your first time, try everything to see what you’re good at. It’ll be hard, but if you don’t push yourself, you won’t get better at anything.”

Track is a good sport for those wanting to get into sports since they can easily find what works for them and their body, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy; no sport is. Meets typically last five to six hours, and weariness can be difficult to avoid. It’s difficult balancing out sports, home life, school, and social life, too.
Track has another function, that being teaching students how to run, thus helping them out in P.E. or other sports they wish to excel in. Through track, a student can learn how to breathe properly while working out, how to run properly, and generally keeps them fit and healthy. Not only that, but they can travel and meet new people. Woodard elaborates on this subject: “I like getting to go against other schools and challenging myself. I enjoy keeping track of my personal best and try to beat it once it comes around.”
Track and field allows students to stay fit, meet new people, challenge themselves, and try out something new. But, to excel in track, one would have to push themselves into bettering and bettering until they achieve their goal.
Track and field has both advantages and disadvantages that can make it hard to see the good in. Nevertheless, a sport like track has become something that everybody can do. The more, the merrier!
