At Pahrump Valley High School, Video Game Club is a place where students who have passion for gaming can go to express themselves and connect with new people. If you want to meet new people and make new friends, come and have fun playing your favorite games with others. They’re very friendly to new members joining and really have no expectations other than having manners and being respectful.
The club is great for expressing yourself, but can it improve life skills or any other type of skills? Mr. Josh Bender, a teacher at PVHS and club advisor, says, “Communication is a big thing they improve on. I used to be a no talking player, but ever since I started playing with other people, my communication has improved by a lot.” Confidence is also another skill that improves while in the club. There’s many people who are shy and have trouble fitting in, but the club really helps because of all the supporting people in the club.
They play almost any type of game except playing games with gore. They play Overcooked, Spiderman, Gang Beast and all sorts of very exciting games. It’s also not just one console, there can be many running at once so no one is just sitting around. Mr. Bender also is very good at many games, so if you ever need help with a game you’re playing, he’s always happy to help. Sometimes they do friendly competitions to connect more with the members. “I would like to grow the club a little more so we can do more friendly competitions like smash bros,” Mr. Bender says.
So, is this club important to students, or is it a waste of time? Yes, the club is very important. No, it is not a waste of time. You can make new friends, or if you don’t want to do that, you can just have fun playing different games, but it would be hard trying not to make friends when you join the club. You improve life skills that can help you later in your life, and you learn new things about all types of games, facts, or lore. It can be anything with games! And if you want to join the club, just talk to Mr. Bender in room 219 on Wednesdays.Â
