This past month, the Theatre Department has started to do Theatre Fun Nights at the school. The Theatre Fun Night started at about six-o’clock and lasted to eight-o’clock with a fifteen minute intermission in-between with snacks and water. At the event, they mainly taught theatre games to everyone like the dating game where one person the “date-ee” goes out of the room while the people inside pick 3 people, one a celebrity, a fictional character, and a historical figure. After, the date-ee comes back inside and has to guess who they are by asking questions. Foreign Interview where there are 3 people: A foreign person, an interviewer, and a translator. In this game, the foreign person has to speak gibberish while the translator says random things and the interviewer has to ask questions, change where you are given a scene and the person watching yells change if they don’t like a line you say and you have to change it. Werewolf, where you are in a village and there are two werewolves who eat two people every night and you have to find out who they are, but mainly they played the dating game and change.
On the first day they held, there were so many younger kids there and parents. Everyone really wanted to be involved. “There were a couple of kids that were mad they weren’t on stage more. I think that’s very powerful.” Audra Duvall stated. Everyone had an amazing time playing the games and learning new things. Whether it was new games, theatre superstitions, all the way to rules. “We have kids eager to participate since our tech conference went so well. It’s kind of nice.” Dr. Duvall said.
On the second night it was about the same. It was decorated with halloween decor; such as webs framing the stage, eerie lighting, cubes on the stages that changed from orange, and purple, caution tape on the rows you couldn’t sit, and spiders. There was even the Five Night at Freddy’s ambiance sound playing in the background along with Doc’s sound board. “It was very atmospheric,” Kat Gaither stated. However, there weren’t as many kids there that day, but there was still a significant amount of people. Everyone was participating even the parents were going all in. “There wasn’t one person that I know of that wasn’t participating.” Gaither stated. On this night they played the same games as the first night, mostly landing on the dating game. During these games they would take suggestions from the audience. Whether it was picking a character from the dating game to a situation for foreign interview, it was always the audience’s choice.
Our theatre department at PVHS is planning to do a Theatre Fun Night almost every month. Every time they have one it will be a new theme like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines, or something revolving around what month it is. If you have any questions about the Theatre Fun Nights please go see Dr. Duvall in room 005. We hope to see you at the next one!
